Voyager of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International, Miami, USA

Lighting and sound systems for two principal venues – Studio B and Royal Promenade – aboard two ships under construction at Kvaerner Masa, Turku, Finland. These sister ships are both 142,000 ton vessels. Studio B is a 900 seat arena which converts into an ice-rink while the Royal Promenade, four decks high and over 100 metres in length, consists of restaurants, entertainment areas and speciality shops overlooked by inside passenger cabins. Lighting equipment includes one ETC Obsession II console and Sensor dimming together with two Wholehog II consoles, HighEnd Studio Colours and Cyberlights, Martin Mac 500’s, Wybron scrollers and a Gray Interfaces DMX routing system. Audio utilises Yamaha and Crest consoles, EAW and Clair Brothers loudspeakers, Crest amplifiers, Shure radio microphones, a Sennheiser IR system and Clearcom ring intercoms. Consultants – Fisher Dachs Associates (lighting) and Jaffee Holden Scarborough (audio). Total contract value $5.2 million.

American Classic Voyages, Chicago, USA

Design of entertainment systems for Main Theatre, Cabaret Lounge and all other public areas aboard two 71,000 ton cruise ships to operate Hawaii inter-island service for AMCV’s subsidiary American Hawaii Cruises. The vessels will be constructed by Litton Industries Ingalls Shipbuilding Division, Pascagoula, Mississippi. They will be the first major passenger vessels constructed in America for over 40 years as well as being the largest ever USA-built cruise ships. Glantre’s entertainment design package includes full specifications with more than 80 drawings.

Aurora, P&O Cruises, Southampton

Design of lighting, sound, video and integrated control systems for Main Theatre, Aft Lounge, Discotheque / multi-purpose venue, outdoor performance space and 12 other venues aboard this 76,000 ton vessel under construction at MeyerWerft, Papenburg, Germany. This design assignment included over 175 drawings and has resulted in state-of-the-art technical installations that are a logical evolution to those previously designed by Glantre for P&O’s Arcadia and Oriana.

Carnival Triumph, Carnival Cruise Lines, Miami, USA

Design, supply and installation of rigging and stage machinery for Show Theatre and Aft Lounge aboard this 102,000 ton vessel under construction at Fincantieri, Monfalcone. The 1,400 seat Show Theatre is similar to that previously implemented aboard Carnival Destiny. Stage installations include motorised rigging with guidance system, revolving stage with motorised rising steps, orchestra pit lift, bandwagon, tracks, drapes and accessories. Control is by Stage Technologies Acrobat 3D! Consultant – the Tetlow Company. Contract value $4.5 million.

Magic and Wonder,  Cruise Liners, Orlando, USA

Complete onboard entertainment systems under initial design contract to Owner and subsequent implementation contract to Fincantieri, Marghera, Italy for two high-specification 85,000 ton cruise ships with Port Canaveral as base port. Design responsibilities covered theatre consultancy, planning and acoustic services as well as detailing and specification of all shipwide and local entertainment systems. Other design team members included Yran & Storbraaten (architects), Auerbach & Associates and Acoustic Dimensions.

Shipwide systems, controlled from a Broadcast Centre, consist of all satellite and in-house television equipment and distribution, together with multi-channel background music and public address. Local systems for two theatres, lounges, restaurants, bars and activity areas consist of audio, video, stage lighting, stage equipment, special effects and show control. The principal manufacturers include Access Technology, ADC, Clancy, Delstar, EAW, ETC, High End, Laser Magic, Martin Professional, Peavey, Rittal, Sennheiser Soundcraft, Stage Technologies, Yamaha, Wavelength and Wybron. All systems employ state-of-the-art technology and are engineered to the highest standards . In addition to design and supply, Glantre’s responsibilities under their implementation contract cover cabling, installation / supervision, testing, commissioning, training and documentation. The contract value is substantial.

Grand Princess, Princess Cruises, Los Angeles, USA

Technical design and planning for Owner of theatrical and entertainment systems and facilities onboard 2,600 passenger 105,000 ton super-liner, constructed by Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy. Initially Grand Princess operates summer cruising in the Mediterranean and winter in the Caribbean with Fort Lauderdale as base port. Responsibilities include theatre consultancy, planning, acoustical services and systems design for the Theatre and two Show Lounges which are equipped with rigging, lighting, video, audio and show control to the highest standards. Additional public areas for which entertainment systems were designed include Discotheque, Teen Club, restaurants, bars, Casino and activity areas. A subsequent contract from Fincantieri covered supply and installation of stage rigging, machinery and special equipment for the Main Theatre, Aft Lounge and Cabaret Lounge. The theatre includes 31 variable and fixed speed hoists, rear projection bridge, safety curtain, performer flying, orchestra lift, three stage lifts, understage and overhead chain drives, wagon tracks, screens, masking, drapes, main curtains and a high specification Acrobat 3D! automation control system. Smaller scale installations for the other two venues include lifts, wagons, scenic rollers, tracks, drapes and controls. Principal manufacturers are JR Clancy, Stage Technologies, Serapid and Delstar. Overall contract value $4.5 million.

Arcadia, P & O Cruises, Southampton, UK

Design and implementation for the upgrade of entertainment technology installations aboard 63,500 ton Chantiers de l’Atlantique built Star Princess for transfer from Princess Cruises USA fleet to P&O’s UK fleet and conversion to Arcadia. Survey and design studies carried out for P&O with subsequent implementation carried out under sub-contract to Harland & Wolff – Mivan Marine Joint Venture.

Scope covered lighting, audio, rigging and control for eight public rooms including 1,700 seat thrust stage Palladium Theatre, Horizon Lounge and Festival Theatre. The contract involved re-use of some Star Princess infra-structure, transfer and refurbishment of certain equipment from Canberra as well as a considerable amount of new equipment and wiring. Mixed 220V and 110V infrastructure with all power connectors rationalised to 220V as per P&O’s European Fleet standard. Dimming based on Strand LD90. Contract value $1.05 million.

Carnival Destiny, Carnival Cruise Lines, Miami, USA

Implementation of all theatrical and entertainment systems for Carnival Destiny, the world’s first 100,000 ton passenger ship built by Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy. There are 21 venues with entertainment technology installation including the Palladium Theatre, Criterion Lounge and the high energy point After Dance Club. For the Palladium, architect  Joe Farcus created a 1,400 seat three deck Grand Showroom to stage spectacular productions; the  stage tower spans five decks from pit to grid and is equipped with motorised rigging, revolving stage and orchestra lift controlled by an Acrobat 3D! system together with extensive lighting, sound, video and effects including a liquid nitrogen fog curtain and three 8W lasers. Principal rigging, lighting and effects manufacturers are Clancy, Delstar, ETC, High End, Interesting Products, Laser Net, Stage Technologies and Wybron Audio and video products are sourced from a wide manufacturer selection including Barco, BSS, Crest, Clearcom, EAW, Klark Teknik, Meyer, Panasonic, Samson, Sony, Tannoy, Tascam and Yamaha. Owners’ consultants – Technical & Marine Planning, the Tetlow Company and MAVCO. Contract value $8.5 million.

Crown Princess and Regal Princess, Princess Cruises, Los Angeles, USA

Design, supply and installation of powered tracking stage wagons for main show lounges of both 70,000 ton vessels. Crown Princess work carried out during dry docking at Bethlehem Steel, Baltimore, with Regal Princess work during wet dock at Port of Vancouver. Contract valued at $170,000 and handled by Glantre’s Fort Lauderdale branch office in partnership with Inter America Stage.

Century, Galaxy and Mercury, Celebrity Cruises, Miami, USA

Stage and effects lighting for the 800 seat Celebrity Theatre and Nightclub of three 72,000 ton cruise ships delivered by MeyerWerft, Papenburg, Germany. Systems were supplied through Funa GmbH and based on the specifications of Theatre Consultants, Auerbach and Associates, USA. For each vessel, the Show Lounge includes an ETC console, 480 ETC digital dimmers, 33 Cyberlight automated luminaires and over 200 ETC and Thomas luminaires, as well as HMI follow spots and effects equipment. Distribution and DMX networks were provided. Total contract value for three vessels exceeds $2.0 million.

Sun Princess and Dawn Princess, Princess Cruises, Los Angeles, USA

Rigging and stage equipment for Theatre and Aft Show Lounge of two Princess 77,000 ton cruise liners delivered by Fincantieri, Monfalcone, Italy. Scope of works includes Austrian type contoured main drape with multiple drives, lineshaft hoists, traveller tracks, projection screens, two side scenery tracks and one rear stage wagon with three integral scissor lifts. All stage machinery is motorised and under computer control. Stage drapery includes fibreoptic starcloths. Grid, galleries and floor structures were provided for Dawn Princess only. There are some differences in the configurations of the two vessels with Dawn Princess featuring Serapid chain understage tracks and drives. Consultants, Thomas Gregor Associates, Los Angeles. Both vessels cruise in the Caribbean during winter and Alaska in summer. Total contract value $3.2 million for the two vessels. An additional assignment handled by Glantre’s Fort Lauderdale branch office was technical management for the Dawn Princess naming ceremony.

Oriana, P&O Cruises, Southampton, UK

State-of-the-art entertainment systems package for the Theatre Royal, Pacific Lounge, Harlequins Nightclub and eleven other venues on-board P&O Cruises’ 69,000 ton fleet flagship delivered by MeyerWerft, Papenburg, Germany.

Systems comprise stage and effects lighting, control, dimming, sound communications, video, stage tracks and drapes. Equipment includes four  ETC stage lighting consoles, Smartrack digital dimmers, 300 ADB and Thomas luminaires, Clay Paky automated luminaires, extensive sound installations with 30 Sennheiser radio microphones channels, eight video projectors, motorised tracks and an interactive systems package for the teenagers’ room, “Decibels”.

Theatre Consultants for Theatre Royal – John Wyckham Associates, effects lighting advisors – Wynne Willson Gottelier. Contract Value $3.4 million. Oriana operates a worldwide cruising programme with Southampton as home port.

Seawing, Airtours, Lancashire, UK

Refurbishment and augmentation of lighting, sound and video systems for Clipper Lounge, Riviera Deck and Lounge, Crow’s Nest and Piano Bar aboard Seawing (ex Southward, Norwegian Cruise Lines). Work carried out at Fincantieri, Palermo, Sicily.

Queen Elizabeth 2, Cunard Line, London, UK / New York, USA

Stage and effects lighting including architectural dimming for Grand Lounge and Yacht Club under major refurbishment carried out at Blohm + Voss, Hamburg. Equipment includes Celco Pathfinder and Pulsar Masterpiece controls, Strand LD90 dimmers, Mini-Scan automated luminaires, scrollers, effects, patch panel and refurbishment of existing luminaires. Lighting Consultants – DHA. Contract value $250,000.

Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam and Veendam, Holland America Line, Seattle, US

Design and consultancy services in association with MAVCO for stage lighting and rigging for 700 seat Show Lounge and Disco aboard four HAL cruise vessels which were constructed in Fincantieri, Italy’s shipyards at Monfalcone (3 vessels) and Marghera (1). The ships were delivered for worldwide cruising. The Show Lounge of each ship includes a 220 dimmer stage lighting system, conventional and automated lighting together with a computer controlled rigging system operating multi-line and point hoist suspension sets, tracking bandwagon, stage revolve, traveller tracks and special effects equipment.
